Energy from the Sun takes approximately 8 minutes to reach Earth, traveling roughly 93 million miles. It is estimated that the amount of the Sun’s energy that reaches Earth in one year is about twice as much as will ever be extracted from all of the Earth’s non-renewable resources including coal, oil, natural gas, and mined uranium combined.
As the World moves towards a carbon neutral economy, we at SunCentral are focused on aiding this transition by pioneering practical ways to use the limitless renewable energy of the Sun to displace fossil fuel energy demand. By displacing fossil fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions are reduced and energy security is increased.
Our first innovation that we are bringing to market is “Sunlighting”. Sunlighting enables the distribution of natural sunlight deep into the interior regions of multi-storey buildings, areas previously not reachable by skylights and windows. Sunlighting provides the design and construction community with placement and aesthetic flexibility by integrating our technology within curtain wall systems and light fixtures.
Sunlighting enables a building to shut off its electric lighting up to 75% of daylight hours when it matters most, midday on sunny days, thus reducing peak load electricity demand. Sunlighting reduces building utility bills by shutting off electric lights and also reduces HVAC cooling costs.
Our technology uses the Sun’s energy ‘as is’, we don’t convert sunlight into electricity and then back into usable energy. Because we use sunlight in its natural form, we are seven times more effective than current photovoltaic (PV) technology as we don’t suffer from energy conversion losses that plague PV.
Vision
By 2030, the global built environment is comprised of Net Zero Energy Buildings; buildings use energy cleanly and more efficiently, thereby:
- Providing healthier, happier and more productive environments
- Reducing our dependence on fossil fuels
- Protecting the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions
- Saving billions of dollars in energy costs that can be spent growing businesses
- Increasing the amount of funds available to invest in new technologies
- Creating new jobs as we move towards a carbon neutral economy
Mission
By 2015, Sunlighting is the preferred method of providing natural sunlight to the interior regions of multi-storey buildings amongst sustainability-minded members of the global design and construction community.
